The Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA) provides sanctioning for races in the province of Alberta, as part of its greater mandate to facilitate the development and safety of racing in the province.
In order to achieve this mandate, in February 2014 the ABA issued to the Edmonton Road and Track Club (ERTC) a list of terms under which a sanction could be provided for the Pigeon lake Road Race. The terms were to assure the safety and credibility of the race, in light of ABA policy and past events. Among the terms were both recommended and mandatory requirements for ABA sanction.
As of May 28, 2014 the ERTC had not complied with the mandatory requirements for sanction. At this point, the ABA was unable to provide sanctioning and commissaires for a race that does not meet the necessary criteria of the mandate.
The ABA deeply regrets that this tough decision impacts many racers of the province, and looks forward to working with ERTC on future events.
