In a weekend of exciting racing in Lac Megantic, Quebec, Team Alberta capped off a strong showing at this year's Junior & Para Road Cycling National Championships bringing home 5 more medals and two new National Champion jerseys.
Saturday June 29th marked a full day of road racing for all of our Junior and Para athletes. Our Team Alberta Para athletes were the first to hit the course, and ended the day with some outstanding results. Jaye Milley brought home his second National Champion jersey of the week, winning the Para C1-C3 road race. Calgary's Brayden McDougall finished not far off the pace in 5th place. In the Para T2 road race, Calgary's Ash Wilson powered his way to an impressive 3rd place finish to conclude the morning's events.
Saturday afternoon saw two of the weekend's most exciting events, with the Junior Men and Junior Women contesting the National title. In the men's race, Edmonton's Evan Burtnik was the top Albertan of the day, finishing in 6th spot amongst the lead sprint. Calgary's Eric Johnstone was next across the line, finishing 22nd followed by Edmonton's Mason Burtnik in 35th. The Junior Women's race saw all three Team Alberta's riders separate into the lead breakaway of six riders heading into the finish. In an exciting sprint to the line, Edmonton's Kinley Gibson got her second podium of the week, finishing in 3rd spot. Not far behind were Sara Poidevin in 5th and Liah Harvey in 6th.
To finish off a great weekend of racing, Sunday June 30th marked the final two events for Team Alberta - the Junior Men and Junior Women Criteriums. In the Junior Men's Criterium, Eric Johnstone was Alberta's top finisher crossing the line in 19th place. Right behind Eric was Mason Burtnik in 21st spot, followed by Evan Burtnik in 24th. Team Alberta's top performance of the day was easily the Women's Criterium, where two Team Alberta riders battled their way to the final podium. In her third podium performance of the weekend, Kinley Gibson walked away with the Junior Women's National Criterium title. Canmore's Sara Poidevin finished in 3rd spot for her first National Championship podium, followed closely by Canmore's Liah Harvey in 5th.
