May 11, 2009 The second weekend of the Alberta Cup Road season kicked off in tremendous fashion with a stop at the Velocity Road Race. Velocity Cycling club put on a tremendous race for the hundreds of participants. In the Women's race a small group controlled the pace and remained tightly working against each other until the end of the race. A sprint finish had Julia Garnet (Team Sask) take out the victory. Jonathan Benskin (Hardcore) made it two podium finished in 2 weeks taking the win in Category 3. With 3 Junior races in the top ten the strength of the youth looks impressive. The Category 4 field stuck together for much of the day with the final few kilmotres deciding the podium. George Irwin (Juventus) was closely followed by Roy Quade (bicisport) and James Lyon (Juventus). The Category 5 race had a huge pack of 50 riders who stuck together for much of the first lap. On the second lap Stefan Schreiber (Hardcore) broke away from the pack and put nearly 4 minutes into the main peleton - never to be caught. The ABA would like to thank the Velocity Cycling Club for a great event. The next stop on the Alberta Road Cup calendar is Bikes on Brodway May 16-18 in Saskatoon.Velocity Road Race - Race Report
